Coroner identifies man killed in crash on 23rd and L Street

UPDATE:

The Kern County coroner has identified 31-year-old Cleighton Dean Shelhart as the victim of a crash that injured another driver at the intersection or 23rd and L Street.

Shelhart was transported to Kern Medical where he died from his injuries. A postmortem examination will be performed to determine cause and manner of death.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Bakersfield Police Department responded to reports of a crash around 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning on the intersection or 23rd and L Street.

According to BPD, when they arrived they found a black SUV and black pickup truck collided leading to both drivers being injured. The driver of the SUV suffered minor to moderate injuries. BPD says the man was unresponsive and transported to a local hospital for treatment and is currently listed in critical condition.

BPD says the driver of the black pickup was not injured. They say as of now it does not appear, alcohol, drugs of speed were factors in the crash. Investigators believe the driver of the SUV may have suffered a "significant medical event" prior to the crash.
