UPDATE: Bakersfield police are investigating a body that was found Thursday morning in the canal that runs through the downtown area.

Officials say they received a call around 7:15 a.m. of a body in the water just north of California Ave and east of P Street. Officers arrived and found the body in the canal and pulled it from the water.

The coroner's office was called to the scene and took possession of the body.

Authorities have not released any information on the victim at this time.

It's not known if the body is that of a man or woman.
