Bakersfield City School District is already in compliance with a potential upcoming directive that will tell public school districts across the country to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms that match their gender identity.

According to a statement from BCSD, the district has been in compliance with a California state law that mandates that students "have the right to participate in sex-segregated programs, activities and facilities based on their self-perception, regardless of their birth gender."

The law went into effect in 2014. A letter from the Obama administration will go out to school districts on Friday asking them to comply and allow transgender students to use the bathroom that they identify with.

Districts that don't comply could face the potential of lawsuits or loss of federal aid.
