Jovani Morales of Bakersfield was in his cousin's house in Mexico City on Tuesday, when he said, all of a sudden, everyone was screaming earthquake.

Morales, 21, recalls the terrifying moments after the 7.1 earthquake rattled Mexico City to 23ABC via FaceTime.

"We were running down the stairs, and on the stairs is when I actually felt it," Morales said. "When I felt it, we were just swaying back and forth and back and forth."

Morales said he traveled to Mexico City to visit family for Mexican Independence Day, which was celebrated on Friday.

He said the earthquake alarms that usually go off in Mexico didn't go off, and the shaking lasted for about five minutes.

Morales said the home he is staying in did not get damaged.
