TEHACHAPI, Calif. — The holidays are a season of giving, but some people still go without even necessities during this time of the year. In October, the Tehachapi Branch Library started giving out personal care items for those in need.

"If they feel like they can't purchase these items, they're welcome to come to get a kit. No questions asked," Timaree Torres said, the office services technician for the Tehachapi Branch Library.

The staff at the library said the good neighbor care kits are not just for the homeless but anyone who is in need. The library is located in the center of Tehachapi, allowing the staff to provide better access to resources.

"Our main focus here at the library is free and equal access to information and services," Veronica Wilson said, the branch supervisor for the Tehachapi Branch Library.

This project hopes to provide to more people at various library locations in Kern County.

"I'd really like to see it expand so that we can reach further in the community and possibly even expand it to maybe the library in California City and Mojave," said Wilson.

Volunteers make the kits, filling them with items such as a water bottle, granola bar, toothbrush and socks. However, the library needs certain items to make more good neighbor care kits

Those items include travel-size personal wipes, lip balm, feminine hygiene products and knit gloves.

If you would like to donate, you can drop off items at the Tehachapi Branch Library, located at 212 Green Street.
